News Update August  2006

Annual General Meeting – Wednesday 27th September

Our AGM will take place at 11.00am on Wednesday 27th September at Dunbar Leisure Pool.  After the business part of the meeting we are delighted to welcome Jim Pearson, a legal expert from Alzheimer's Scotland, who will be coming along to answer your legal questions about community care.  The meeting will finish with a free buffet lunch.  We have enclosed a flier giving full details and a sheet to let Jim know in advance of any particular questions you would like him to answer.

Autumn Trip – Tuesday 12th September

We have arranged a “double-header” for our autumn trip this year of a visit to the National Mining Museum at Newtongrange followed by a lunch stop at Dobbies Garden Centre.  The trip is on Tuesday 12th September and we have organised coach travel there and back from various points in East Lothian.  Please see the enclosed leaflet for further details.  Please contact us by Tuesday 5th September at the latest to book your place.

Making an Appointment

As a reminder, the opening hours of our Carers Centre are 10.00am until 4.00pm Monday to Friday;  we sometimes may need to close for lunch.  You are welcome to call in any time between these hours, but please be aware that our Carers Support Staff may be in the middle of appointments with other carers, running a group or doing follow-up work.  Therefore, if you want to be sure of meeting with staff with privacy and protected time, please make an appointment in advance.  Thank you for your co-operation.

Direct Payments/Independent Living Fund – Thursday 12th October

We are delighted that Emer O’Leary, an expert in Direct Payments and the Independent Living Fund, will be coming to give a talk/workshop on these subjects on Thursday 12th October from 2.00pm to 4.00pm at Ormiston Library.  For more information, please call Kathleen at the Carers Centre.

 

VOCAL training courses

VOCAL, the Edinburgh Carers Centre, has a range of training courses coming up, which are open to carers in East Lothian.  Each course meets once per week for 6-8 weeks.  The topics are:  Looking after Yourself if you are Looking after Someone Else: 8th September - 27th October, 10am – 12.30pm.  Caring for Someone with a Heart Condition: 12th September – 31st October, 10am - 1pm.  Caring for Someone (and Working): 17th October – 5th December, 6pm - 8.30pm.  Are you Worried about a Loved One’s Drinking?: Thursday mornings, 5th October - 9th November.  For more information about any of these, please call Jane on (0131) 622 6666.

10th Anniversary

As part of our 10th Anniversary celebrations, we are putting together a ‘10 Year Review’ with photographs of various events and outings from the past decade.  If anyone has any objection to a photograph of them being used in this way please let us know as soon as possible.  Thanks.

 

simplyhealth Carers Choice Award

The PRTC and the healthcare organisation ‘simplyhealth’ are looking to make an award to a GP who has been particularly supportive to carers.  This year’s prize will be £250 each for the carer and the GP.  If you would like to nominate your GP we can send you more details.  The closing date for award is 1st September.

CaF have a new support worker covering the Lothians.  Joanne McIntosh can come out and meet families and carers of children with a disability and provide support on:  information on local services, negotiating with other agencies, help to access benefits and grants, and emotional support in a crisis.  You can contact Joanne on 01506 828899 or scotland@cafamily.org.uk

 

One Parent Families Scotland

One Parent Families Scotland has been awarded a Big Lottery grant to develop an information and support service for lone parent families affected by disability.  Initially focussing on the Lothians, a free telephone helpline service (0808 801 0323) will cover Disability Welfare Benefits in addition to offering advice and information on a range of lone parent issues.  The Helpline hours for the Edinburgh office are: Tuesday and Friday 12.30pm – 2.30pm; Wednesday 11.00am – 1.00pm and Thursday 12.30pm – 3.30pm.  For further information please see www.opfs.org.uk or contact info@parentconnections.org.uk
