Every Professional Has a Role in Supporting Unpaid Carers

Unpaid carers are family members, friends and neighbours who provide care and support to someone who could not manage without their help. Many carers do not identify themselves as carers and may remain hidden until they reach a crisis point.

By thinking carer, professionals can help to identify carers early, ensure they receive the support they need, and improve outcomes for both the carer and the person they care for.

Carers of East Lothian’s Think Carer Training equips teams with the knowledge and confidence to recognise carers, understand their needs, and connect them with the right support.

Designed for professionals across health, social care, education, housing, community services, the third sector and other public-facing roles, this training helps organisations improve outcomes for unpaid carers and the people they care for.

What Will Participants Learn?

Our training will help your team to:

  • Identify unpaid carers and recognise the signs that someone may have caring responsibilities.
  • Understand the impact that caring can have on a person’s physical health, wellbeing, employment, education and finances.
  • Increase awareness of carers’ rights and relevant legislation.
  • Recognise carers as equal partners in care and involve them appropriately in decision-making.
  • Understand the local support, services and resources available for unpaid carers.
  • Build confidence in having supportive conversations with carers and making effective referrals.
