Hayden’s story

We work closely with East Lothian Council’s Young Carers Service. Here is a story highlighting the experience of one of the young carers they support.

My name is Hayden, I’m 17 years old, and I live in Musselburgh, East Lothian. I love archery and have been doing it for many years. I also enjoy being outdoors and going for walks. I’m really into car racing too. I first got involved with the young carers services about 5 years ago. At first, I didn’t know if I was a young carer, but a youth worker explained it to me.

I care for my mum and dad, who both have health problems. They’re separated, so I have to travel between their houses, which takes two buses and about an hour. This has taught me to manage my time well, and I often use the bus rides to do homework or study. Being a young carer has taught me to be independent and patient.

The best support I’ve had from the service is the breaks from caring. They give me a chance to do fun activities and meet other young carers in similar situations. My favourite break was attending the Scottish Young Carers Festival.

Sometimes, I worry about the future and leaving my Mum and Dad if I go off to study. I try not to let it stress me out too much and focus on staying positive.

If there is a child or young person in your family caring for or helping to care for a parent, sibling or other family member they can find out more about this service and other support available here Young carers | East Lothian Council or contact youngcarers@eastlothian.gov.uk.
