Here are some more of the moving images that carers shared with us as part of our lockdown photo competition launched in June 2020 to coincide with Carers Week and it’s theme this year of “making caring visible”.
The entries we received touched us deeply with their insight into the everyday lives of unpaid carers in recent months. A huge thank you to everyone who took part in the competition.
We will be announcing the winner on Monday 31st August.
We hope to hold a physical exhibition of the photos in the future when social gatherings are allowed again. If you would like to have a photo included in the exhibition (but obviously not the competition) please email your image with a brief explanation to centre@coel.org.uk with the title “photo exhibition”.
I captured a touching moment on camera of my husband, whom I care for full time. He has had a horrific car accident, which caused a traumatic brain injury and a stroke. He was 44 and a Chartered Accountant and he misses his job terribly. During the lockdown, we offered his services to Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home who wanted a Volunteer Financial Specialist. We needed to prepare him for the distance “interview” on screen so we dressed him up in one of his suits (he still has these from when he was an accountant) but left his slippers on as we were sure that would not be seen. I was so proud of him for trying so hard and the good news is he got the job!
This is a photo that I took after finally persuading my little person to leave the house after shielding. He walked along the path with his hands in his pockets and kept asking to go back home. I challenged him to climb as high as possible up the tree and I captured this shot which I think has encapsulated the light at the end of the tunnel of lockdown as well as him challenging his anxiety and ending up free high up in a tree!
This picture made me so happy. Reason: Rob had not been out for 11 weeks and this was the first time we managed to get out together again with Ben (the dog). This was the best day as it brightened up both our moods.
