For Carers Week 2020, a group of staff and carers gathered online for a lively discussion about our favourite books, stories and poems. Thank you to all who took part in the Great Books! event.
If you weren’t able to join us, here are some of our suggestions for a good read:
- Any book by Alan Bennett
- The Sewing Machine, by Natalie Fergie
- Memo for Spring, by Liz Lochead, in particular the poem “The Choosing”
- Miss Austin, by Gill Hornby
- Venus and Aphrodite, by Bettany Hughes
- To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
- Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell
- Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen
- Any book by Robert Bailey
- The Wee Free Men, by Terry Pratchett
- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain
- Me and Ma Gal, by Des Dillon
- The Outrun, by Amy Liptrot
- Women Who Run with the Wolves, by Clarissa Pinkola Estés
- Greenvoe, by George Mackay Brown
- Books by Ambrose Parry (pseudonym for writers Chris Brookmyre and Marisa Haetzman)
During our chat we also touched on where to get books (online and offline), how to get books (oh the perks of volunteering at jumble sales!) and perhaps most importantly how to get time to read books!
There was also a discussion about what books you can happily read in the bath without worrying if they get wet.
If you have a favourite book you wish to share here, or would be interested in joining a carers’ book group, please email kirsteen@coel.org.uk.
